Kalamata, the capital of Messinia, is a lively seaside city at the foot of Mount Taygetos. World-famous for its olives and olive oil, it combines long beaches, a historic centre and a gateway to the treasures of Messinia. It is ideal for a holiday that combines sea, history and gastronomy.
Kalamata was built on the site of ancient Pharai and is linked to important moments of modern history. It was the first town to be liberated in the Greek War of Independence, on 23 March 1821. The Villehardouin castle recalls the Frankish period, while the city grew as a commercial port.
The historic centre with the castle, the Byzantine church of the Holy Apostles and the old town is a must. The long beach and the marina offer strolls and swimming. Very close are ancient Messene, an impressive archaeological site, and the famous beaches of Messinia such as Voidokilia.
Messinian cuisine is famous for its excellent olive oil, Kalamata olives, figs and roast pork. Try lalangia, diples and local cheeses in tavernas in the city and along the seafront. The region’s gastronomy is considered one of the richest in the Peloponnese.
Kalamata’s nightlife is lively, especially along the seafront and in the harbour area, with bars, cafés and clubs. The historic centre offers more relaxed options with meze restaurants and bars. In summer the city buzzes with life until late.

Since this is a self-drive trip in your own car, there is no departure surcharge — you set off from wherever suits you.
For your trip within Greece, a valid national ID card or passport is enough. If you travel by air, you need an official photo ID for the airport check. For minors travelling, please check any required documents in advance.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.
