At the tip of the Pelion peninsula, where the Pagasetic Gulf meets the Aegean, lies Trikeri — a place left outside Pelion’s tourism. Its women still wear traditional dress at festivals, and its harbour, Agia Kyriaki, lives on fishing and wooden caiques.
From Volos 80 kilometres, an hour and a half of bends but with constant views over the gulf. From Athens about 380, four and a half hours. After Argalasti the road narrows — drive at an easy pace.
The village of Trikeri with its whitewashed houses and views. Agia Kyriaki, the harbour 4 kilometres below, with a traditional boatyard where wooden hulls are still built. Palaio Trikeri, an islet ten minutes by caique, with the Evangelistria monastery, pine-covered shores and no cars — it served as a place of exile during the Civil War.
Agia Sofia, Kotes and the islet’s small coves. Calm water, as the Pagasetic is an enclosed gulf — ideal for families.
Fresh fish and seafood at Agia Kyriaki, cheaper than the rest of Pelion. Local olive oil and figs.
Caiques to Palaio Trikeri run daily in summer; out of season ask at the harbour. The islet has no cars and no ATM.
