Agios Nikolaos, in eastern Crete, is a cosmopolitan destination built around the picturesque Lake Voulismeni. The capital of the Lasithi region, it combines elegance, beautiful beaches and nearby attractions such as Elounda and Spinalonga. It is ideal for couples and lovers of luxury.
The area has been inhabited since Minoan times, with important finds nearby. The name comes from the Byzantine chapel of Saint Nicholas. Nearby Spinalonga was a Venetian fortress and later, until 1957, the last leper colony in Europe, a history that inspired the novel “The Island”.
Lake Voulismeni, in the heart of the town, with its legends and the cafés around it, is the trademark. Cosmopolitan Elounda with its luxury resorts and the island-fortress of Spinalonga are a must. The Lasithi Plateau with its windmills, the Kritsa Gorge and Vai beach with its palm trees stand out.
The cuisine of Lasithi is based on the Cretan tradition of olive oil, wild greens, cheeses and fresh fish. Try dakos, snails, local meat and seafood in tavernas around the lake and in Elounda. Tsikoudia and Cretan kalitsounia round off the meal.
Nightlife is concentrated around Lake Voulismeni and the harbour, with bars, cafés and restaurants. The atmosphere is elegant and cosmopolitan, especially in Elounda with its luxury venues. Evenings pass in a relaxed way by the water, with a romantic mood.
