Nafplio, the first capital of the newly founded Greek state, is one of the most romantic towns in Greece. With Venetian castles, neoclassical mansions and picturesque alleys, it charms at every step. Its short distance from Athens makes it ideal for getaways all year round.
Nafplio played a central role in the Greek War of Independence and was the first capital (1823–1834). It was here that the first governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was assassinated. Long Venetian and Ottoman rule left imposing fortifications, while the town was always an important port of the Argolid.
The Palamidi castle, with its 999 steps and the view, dominates the town. The Bourtzi, the Venetian fortress in the middle of the harbour, is the symbol of Nafplio. Akronafplia, Syntagma Square and the picturesque alleys of the old town, along with nearby ancient Epidaurus and Mycenae, complete the picture.
Nafplio’s cuisine combines Peloponnesian flavours with fresh seafood. Try local meze, pork with celery and sweets such as the “Antica” ice cream. In the tavernas of the old town and along the seafront you will find authentic flavours with a view.
Nightlife is lively yet elegant, with bars and meze restaurants in the alleys of the old town and around Syntagma Square. Evenings pass romantically with a drink by the harbour and a view of the illuminated Bourtzi. The atmosphere is ideal for couples.

Since this is a self-drive trip in your own car, there is no departure surcharge — you set off from wherever suits you.
For your trip within Greece, a valid national ID card or passport is enough. If you travel by air, you need an official photo ID for the airport check. For minors travelling, please check any required documents in advance.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.
