Agistri is the small pine-covered island next to Aegina, an hour from Piraeus. It is close enough for a day trip, but worth staying on: once the day boats leave, the island falls completely quiet. Dense pine runs down to the sea and the water is unusually clear for somewhere so near Athens.
FromPiraeus by fast boat in about 55 minutes, or by conventional ferry in a little over an hour, to Skala or Megalochori. There is also a local boat from Aegina. Sailings are frequent all year.
The island was settled by Arvanites in the 16th century and lived for centuries on fishing and pine resin. Its turn to tourism is relatively recent and happened without large hotel complexes, which is what preserved its character.
Skala is the liveliest point, with a sandy beach beside the harbour. Megalochori has the traditional settlement and the church of Eisodia. Aponisos to the west is a small cove facing an islet, with astonishing blue water. The cycle path crossing the island through the pines is among the finest you will ride this close to Athens.

Fresh fish and seafood at Skala and Megalochori. The island has no “tourist” cuisine — the tavernas are plain and honest.
Hire a bicycle or scooter; the island is easily crossed. Chalikiada has no umbrellas or canteen — bring water.
Three days are enough to see both sides of the island without rushing. The package includes tickets and accommodation with breakfast.
