Two hours from Athens, Kalavryta combines mountains, history, and a train that runs through a gorge. It’s an ideal short car getaway — especially in winter, when the Kalavryta/Helmos ski centre is open.
From Athens via Corinth and the new national road towards Patras, you exit at Diakopto and climb up to Kalavryta. A lovely way to do it: leave the car in Diakopto, ride the rack railway up through the Vouraikos Gorge, and come back down the same evening. The road to the Helmos ski centre needs snow chains in winter.
By tradition, the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence of 1821 is placed at the Monastery of Agia Lavra. On 13 December 1943, German forces executed the male population of the town; the Kalavryta Holocaust Museum and the site of the massacre at Kapi are memorial sites visited with respect.
The rack railway from Diakopto to Kalavryta through the Vouraikos Gorge; Megaspilaio Monastery, built into a sheer cliff face; Agia Lavra; the Cave of the Lakes at Kastria; the Helmos ski centre; and the Holocaust Museum.
Mountain Peloponnesian cuisine: grilled meats, rooster in wine sauce, hand-cut pasta (hilopites), local cheeses and the area’s renowned yoghurt. Kalavryta’s central square has traditional taverns, while the Aigialeia area has notable wineries producing Mavrodafni varieties.
Nightlife is limited and family-oriented: cafés and taverns around the central square, busy on winter weekends. For something livelier, Aigio and Patras are within driving distance.
