Psara is a small, bare, wind-beaten island in the north-eastern Aegean — and at the same time one of the most charged names in Greek history. Around 400 people live here today. There is no tourist industry; there is sea, rock and memory.
By ferry from Chios (about 3.5 hours) or directly from Lavrio once a week (around 11 hours). Sailings are infrequent and weather-dependent — leave slack in your plans.
In June 1824 the Ottomans destroyed the island. The last stand at Mavri Rachi, where the final defenders blew themselves up rather than surrender, inspired Solomos’ famous couplet. Konstantinos Kanaris, the fireship captain who later became prime minister, came from here.

Kato Gialos beside the village, Lakka, Limnos and Ftelio — clear water, almost nobody, no facilities.

Bring whatever you consider essential — shops are minimal. The meltemi blows hard in August and can delay ferries.
