Agathonisi is the northernmost Dodecanese island and one of the smallest inhabited islands in Greece. Three villages — Agios Georgios, Megalo and Mikro Chorio — fewer than 200 residents, and a sea that looks like a swimming pool. There is nothing to “do”; that is precisely the point.
By ferry from Patmos or Samos (about an hour), or on the Dodecanese fast boat. Samos and Kos have airports. Sailings are sparse outside summer.
The island has been continuously inhabited since antiquity; traces of a settlement and cisterns survive. For centuries it lived on herding and fishing, and for long periods belonged to the monastery of Patmos.
The three villages, linked by short walks. The chapel of Agios Georgios at the harbour. And the paths to the remote coves — the island is just 5 kilometres long, so everything is reachable on foot.
Spilia, Tsangari, Pounta and Gaidouravlakos. Pebbles and clear water; none organised, none crowded.
Goat, fresh fish, local cheese. Four or five tavernas, all family-run.
Bring cash — there is no bank. Rooms are few, book early. You do not need a car.
Four days, ideally combined with Patmos or Lipsi. The package includes tickets and accommodation with breakfast.
