Agios Efstratios, “Ai Stratis”, is among the most isolated inhabited islands in Greece: about 250 residents, one settlement, no tourist infrastructure. For anyone after quiet in its purest form, there is no better destination in the Aegean.
By ferry from Limnos (about 1.5 hours) or from Lavrio/Kavala on the North Aegean line. Limnos has an airport with flights from Athens and Thessaloniki. Sailings are few — build that into your plans.
The island served as a place of exile for political prisoners from the 1930s to the dictatorship. Yannis Ritsos, Menelaos Loundemis and hundreds of others spent years here. The 1968 earthquake flattened the old settlement; today’s was built afterwards with prefabricated houses.
The Exile Museum and the few surviving old houses. The petrified forest in the north, millions of years old, less known than that of Lesvos but equally striking. And walking routes through treeless country with the sea always in sight.
Alonitsi, Lidario, Agios Antonios — wild, clean and almost always empty. Some are reached only by boat.
Fish of the day, goat and local pulses. Very few tavernas, all in the settlement.
There is no ATM — bring cash. Accommodation is rooms in houses; book ahead. Weather can change the sailings.
