Ancient Olympia, in the western Peloponnese, is the birthplace of the Olympic Games and one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Set in a lush landscape of plane trees and the river Alfeios, it combines deep history and serenity. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At Olympia the Olympic Games were held from 776 BC in honour of Zeus, every four years, uniting the Greek world in a sacred truce. The site was a panhellenic religious centre, with the famous temple of Zeus that housed the chryselephantine statue, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The archaeological site with the temple of Zeus, the temple of Hera and the ancient stadium, where the lighting of the Olympic Flame is revived, is breathtaking. The Archaeological Museum houses masterpieces such as the Hermes of Praxiteles and the Nike of Paionios. The workshop of Pheidias completes the visit.
The cuisine of Elis is based on excellent olive oil, meat, local vegetables and fresh produce. Try traditional dishes and local wines in tavernas in the modern village of Olympia. Peloponnesian gastronomy is rich and authentic.
The modern village of Olympia is small and quiet, with cafes, tavernas and a few bars along the main street. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, ideal after a day of touring the archaeological site. It is a destination for history and quiet.
