Elassona lies between Thessaly and Macedonia, on the western foothills of Olympus. Travellers tend to drive past on their way north, yet it holds one of the most important Byzantine monasteries in Thessaly and access to the quietest side of Olympus.
From Thessaloniki 130 kilometres, an hour and a half. From Athens about 380, four hours. From Larissa just 40 minutes. The roads to the mountain villages are surfaced and in good condition.
The Monastery of Panagia Olympiotissa, built in the 13th-14th century above the town, is among the most important Byzantine monuments in the area, with a striking carved iconostasis and rare manuscripts. Neighbouring Tsaritsani was in the 18th century a significant centre of trade and letters, with mansions still standing.

Spring and autumn for walking, winter for snow at Kokkinopilos, summer for cool air. The area is far less crowded than the eastern side of Olympus.
Meat from the Olympus flocks, local cheeses, trahanas and pies. Tsaritsani still has old coffee houses in operation.
The Olympiotissa keeps set visiting hours — check them. For the Olympus paths, ask about conditions, especially outside summer.
