Konitsa sits in tiers on the hillside, looking over the valley where the Aoos and the Voidomatis meet. It is the gateway to northern Zagori and Grammos, and it has something few Greek villages do: a square with a view over an entire valley.
From Ioannina 65 kilometres, an hour on the Egnatia motorway. From Thessaloniki 260, three hours. From Athens about 500, five and a half hours. The village roads are narrow but surfaced; in winter they need care.
The Konitsa bridge, built in 1870, with a 40-metre span and 20 metres high, is among the largest single-arch bridges in the Balkans. Under the arch still hangs the bell that warned travellers of strong wind. The area suffered badly in the Civil War — the final battles were fought on Grammos.
The Aoos gorge, with a path starting at the bridge and reaching Stomiou Monastery in two hours. The Voidomatis, among the cleanest rivers in Europe, with rafting and canoeing from April to October. Papingo, Great and Small, half an hour away, with the Astraka Towers above. And the Dragon Lakes for those up to the climb.
The area lies within the Northern Pindos National Park. You will see vultures overhead and, with luck, bear tracks on a muddy path. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.
Pies with hand-rolled pastry, tsipouro, local cheese and Plateos beans. Konitsa has tavernas with home cooking at sensible prices.
Book rafting in advance. The Aoos path has no shade along its whole length — take water. In winter the road to Papingo can close with snow.
