Evros is the most remote part of mainland Greece and one of the most interesting. It holds the most important raptor sanctuary in Europe, a town that lived on silk, and a river delta home to more than 300 bird species.
From Thessaloniki 280 kilometres on the Egnatia motorway, three hours. From Athens about 800 — better with an overnight stop halfway. Distances within the region are short: Dadia to Soufli 8 kilometres, Soufli to Alexandroupoli 65.
The Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli Forest National Park hosts 36 of Europe’s 38 raptor species, among them the black vulture — the only breeding colony in the Balkans. From the observatory, with binoculars, you watch them fly close by. The information centre arranges transport up to it.
The town of silk: in the 19th century dozens of koukoulospita operated here, the tall many-windowed buildings where silkworms were raised. Today the Silk Museum and the Silk House are open, and several workshops sell genuine silk.
Kunefe, local sausages, aniseed tsipouro and fresh fish from the Evros.
For Dadia bring binoculars and quiet clothing. The best light for observation is early morning. This is a border region — always carry identification.
