Northern Evros is the edge of Greece — and a crossroads of cultures. Didymoteicho was a Byzantine capital and an Ottoman centre, while Orestiada is the newest town in the country, built from nothing in 1923 for the refugees of Adrianople.
From Thessaloniki 360 kilometres, four and a half hours on the Egnatia then the Alexandroupoli-Orestiada road. From Alexandroupoli 95 kilometres, an hour. The northbound road is good and follows the Evros.
Didymoteicho was the capital of John VI Kantakouzenos and the first European capital of the Ottomans before Adrianople. Its castle, with walls and towers from the 6th to 14th centuries, dominates the town.
The Bayezid Mosque (1420), the oldest and largest Ottoman mosque in the Balkans, with its distinctive pyramidal lead roof — currently under restoration. The castle, the Folklore Museum and the underground cistern. In Orestiada, the grid plan of the refugee town and the Ethnological Museum of Thrace a little to the south.
Kunefe, yogurtlu, local butter and honey. The regional cooking carries a strong eastern influence.
Border region: carry identification. Some monuments keep limited hours — ask at the town hall. Winter here is the coldest in Greece.
