Namibia, in south-western Africa, is a country of surreal landscapes: vast deserts, giant orange dunes, a wild coast and rich wildlife. It is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world, ideal for photography, safaris and unique nature experiences.
Namibia is inhabited by ancient peoples such as the San (Bushmen) and the Himba. It was a German colony and later under South African administration, gaining independence in 1990. The German influence is still visible in the architecture of towns such as Swakopmund.
Sossusvlei, with the highest dunes in the world and the otherworldly Deadvlei, is the trademark of the country. Etosha National Park with its abundant wildlife, the Skeleton Coast, the Fish River Canyon and the Himba people offer unforgettable images.
Namibian cuisine combines African and German influences: game meat (kudu, oryx), biltong (dried meat), fresh fish on the coast and German-style baked goods. Try local specialities and local beer. The flavours are strong and authentic.
Namibia is a nature destination, not a nightlife one. In Windhoek and Swakopmund there are restaurants, breweries and bars for relaxed evenings. The most spectacular “entertainment” is watching the astonishing starry desert sky.
