Meteora, in Thessaly, is one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world: Byzantine monasteries built on top of towering rocks that seem to float in the air. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it combines deep spirituality, a geological wonder and breathtaking views. It is an ideal destination all year round.
The first hermits settled in the caves of the rocks around the 11th century, seeking isolation. From the 14th century the monasteries began to be built, reaching 24 at their peak. Today six remain in operation, preserving priceless treasures, frescoes and manuscripts of the Orthodox tradition.
The six active monasteries —Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Holy Trinity, Roussanou, Saint Nicholas Anapafsas and Saint Stephen— are open to visitors and offer stunning views. Sunset from the rocks is unforgettable, while climbing enthusiasts find here a world-class destination. Nearby Kalambaka and Kastraki are the bases for exploring.
The Thessalian cuisine of the area is based on meat, local cheeses, mushrooms and traditional pies. Try local dishes in tavernas in Kalambaka and Kastraki, accompanied by tsipouro. The flavours are authentic and hearty, ideal after a day of exploring.
Nightlife is calm and family-friendly, with cafés, tavernas and a few bars in Kalambaka and Kastraki. The atmosphere is relaxed, with an emphasis on company and the view of the illuminated rocks. It is a destination for quiet and contact with nature, not for intense partying.

For your trip within Greece, a valid national ID card or passport is enough. If you travel by air, you need an official photo ID for the airport check. For minors travelling, please check any required documents in advance.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.
