Kalymnos, the “island of the sponge divers”, is an authentic Dodecanese destination with a strong maritime tradition and wild beauty. In recent years it has become a world climbing destination, thanks to its spectacular limestone cliffs. It combines tradition, adventure and picturesque landscapes.
Kalymnos went down in history for sponge diving, which for centuries was the island’s main source of wealth and identity. The sponge divers travelled as far as North Africa, a tradition still honoured with festivals. The island passed through Romans, Byzantines, the Knights of Saint John and Italians.
Pothia, the colourful capital-harbour with its neoclassical mansions, is full of life. The cliffs at Masouri and Arginonta attract climbers from around the world. The islet of Telendos opposite, the Chrysocheria castle and the beaches of Myrties and Emporios stand out.
Kalymnian cuisine is famous for its fresh seafood, mermizeli and makarouna (handmade pasta). Try grilled octopus, local cheeses and the galatopita sweet. The island’s maritime tradition is reflected in every dish.
Nightlife is concentrated in Pothia and Masouri, with bars and tavernas by the sea. The atmosphere is relaxed and authentic, with a strong presence of climbers in autumn. Evenings pass quietly with sunset views towards Telendos.
