A few words

Halkidiki spreads across northern Greece in three distinctive peninsulas: Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. It combines pine-covered coastlines, blue-green waters, picturesque villages and cosmopolitan Thessaloniki as a base. Six days let you experience all three legs at a comfortable pace.

History

The region has been inhabited since antiquity and Aristotle was born here, at ancient Stagira. Halkidiki holds important archaeological sites such as Olynthos, with its famous Hippodamian grid plan, and ancient Potidaea. On the Athos peninsula the monastic state of Mount Athos has flourished since the 10th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sights

On Kassandra the highlights are Afytos with its stone houses, Kallithea and the Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus, while Sithonia offers Vourvourou, Agios Ioannis, Porto Koufo and Sarti. On the third peninsula, Ouranoupoli with its Prosphorion Tower is the departure point for cruises that sail along the Mount Athos coastline. Also worth visiting are the Petralona Cave, ancient Stagira and a full day in Thessaloniki with the White Tower and the Rotunda.

Food

Halkidiki is famous for fresh fish and seafood, its large green olives and its excellent honey. In the mountain villages you will find savoury pies, local cheeses and charcoal-grilled meats, while in Thessaloniki the bougatsa shops, soutzoukakia and mezedes with ouzo and tsipouro are a must. Wines from the wider region, especially those made from local varieties, pair beautifully with every meal.

Nightlife

Kassandra, and particularly Kallithea and Chaniotis, concentrates the liveliest nightlife with beach bars and clubs. Sithonia offers more relaxed evenings in picturesque harbours such as Neos Marmaras and Sarti. Thessaloniki, with the Ladadika and Valaoritou districts, keeps going until dawn all year round.

Useful information

Distances between the three peninsulas are longer than they look on the map, so a car is essential. A visit to the monastic peninsula of Athos itself is not part of the programme, as it requires a special permit, the diamonitirion, and is open to male pilgrims only; all travellers, however, can admire the monasteries from the sea on a cruise from Ouranoupoli. Currency: Euro· Time: Greek local time· Access: by road from Athens to Thessaloniki on the national motorway, about 500 km and 5 to 5.5 hours, or by air to Thessaloniki Makedonia Airport with a flight of roughly 55 minutes; from Thessaloniki, Kassandra is about 90 km away and Ouranoupoli about 120 km.

Tour's Location

When is the best time to travel?

This is a made-to-order trip, so you choose the dates. We are happy to advise on the best season for this destination and on how the weather, prices and crowds change through the year — just tell us roughly when you are thinking of travelling.

What is included in the price?

The main inclusions are:

  • 5 nights accommodation in selected hotels with breakfast
  • Suggested driving itinerary covering all three peninsulas
  • Coastal cruise from Ouranoupoli along the Athos shoreline
  • Thessaloniki city guidance with monument and market suggestions

The full list of what is and is not included appears in the "Included / Excluded" section on this page.

What travel documents do I need?

For domestic travel you need a valid police ID card or passport in order to board the ferry or the flight. Bring your AMKA or European Health Insurance Card, and a valid driving licence plus a credit card in the driver's name if a car or scooter is included. Minors must carry their own travel document. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with our office before you book.

What currency is used?

The local currency is Euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.

Can I change the dates or cancel?

Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.

Is travel insurance included?

Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.

Can the trip be customised?

Yes — this is an individual trip, not a group departure. There is no fixed itinerary and no coach schedule: you travel on your own, at your own pace. We can change the number of nights, the class of hotel, add or drop destinations and arrange transfers, car hire or private guides.

How do I book?

Send us a request through the form on this page, call us, or drop by the office. We will come back with availability and a written quotation before anything is charged. The trip as shown runs for 6 days.
