Ioannina, the capital of Epirus, is a romantic city built on the shores of Lake Pamvotida. With its historic castle, the lake island and a rich tradition in silverwork, it combines history, nature and a lively student life. It is an ideal destination all year round and a gateway to the Zagorochoria.
Ioannina flourished, especially during the era of Ali Pasha, who made it the capital of a powerful pashalik in the late 18th century. The city was an important centre of the Modern Greek Enlightenment, with notable schools and benefactors. The long Ottoman presence left mosques and the characteristic castle.
The Castle, one of the oldest Byzantine citadels, with Its Kale and the Aslan Mosque, is the heart of the city’s history. The lake island, where Ali Pasha was killed, with its monasteries, is reached by small boat. The Perama Cave, with its impressive stalactites, is very close.
Epirot cuisine is famous for its pies (cheese pie, chicken pie), meat, dairy products and mushrooms. Try local dishes and baklava in tavernas in the castle and along the lakefront. The region’s gastronomy is rich and hearty.
Thanks to its large university, Ioannina has a lively and youthful nightlife. The area around the castle and the lakefront fill with bars, cafes and music venues. The atmosphere is lively, with options from traditional spots to modern clubs.
