The Pozar baths at Agios Nikolaos, Aridaia, are the most popular winter destination in Macedonia — and deservedly so. Water at 37 degrees wells up from the rock and runs through a gorge with waterfalls. Swimming in an outdoor pool while snow falls around you is not easily forgotten.
From Thessaloniki 110 kilometres, an hour and a half. From Athens about 600. The road from Aridaia to the baths is 13 kilometres through the gorge. In winter weekends are busy — arrive early for parking.
The outdoor pools and private baths of the complex. The cave above the springs, with stalactites and a lamp-lit route. The path beside the stream with its small waterfalls. And the villages of Almopia, with chestnut and apple trees. Kaimaktsalan is 40 minutes away for those who also want to ski.
Winter is the classic season — hot water, cold air, snow around. Autumn has fewer people and fine colour. Summer also works, cooler than the plain.
Almopia pies, local meats, mushrooms and tsipouro. Aridaia has good tavernas at fair prices.
Bring flip-flops, a bathrobe and a second swimsuit. Weekends from December to February need early accommodation booking.
