Grevena is one of the least visited regions of Greece and at the same time one of the greenest. The town is small and quiet, but around it spreads the Pindos range with beech and black pine forests, stone bridges and the Valia Calda national park.
From Thessaloniki 170 kilometres on the Egnatia motorway, two hours. From Athens about 430, four and a half. From Ioannina an hour. The motorway makes it easy; the mountain roads to the villages are narrow and need chains in winter.
The area was a stage on the route of the Vlach herders. The stone bridges — Aziz Aga, Portitsa, Spanos — were built in the 18th and 19th centuries by Pindos masons and served the caravans. The town’s Natural History Museum displays the largest mastodon tusks in the world, found here.
Valia Calda (“warm valley” in Vlach), a national park of forests, rivers and bears. The Portitsa gorge, a narrow passage between vertical cliffs with a stone bridge. The Vasilitsa ski centre at 2,100 metres. And the villages of Smixi, Samarina and Perivoli.
Autumn for mushrooms — Grevena is the Greek capital of them, with a festival every October. Winter for skiing. Spring and summer for walking in Valia Calda.
Mushrooms in every form, Vlach cheeses, boiled goat and trahanas. Samarina and Smixi have tavernas with home cooking.
For Valia Calda you need good shoes; the road to the entrance is unsurfaced. In winter check mountain road conditions before setting off.
