Mountain Nafpaktia is one of the most misunderstood parts of Greece: everyone knows Nafpaktos with its Venetian harbour, few drive the 40 kilometres up to its stone villages. Up there are fir forests, arched bridges and guesthouses open all year.
From Athens the Rio-Antirrio bridge makes it easy: about 220 kilometres, three hours. From Patras, half an hour. From Nafpaktos the road to Ano Chora climbs in bends — allow an hour for 40 kilometres and drive carefully, especially in fog.
Off Nafpaktos in 1571 was fought the Battle of Lepanto, one of the most decisive in the Mediterranean. The town’s castle, with five tiers descending to the sea, is among the best preserved in Greece.
Ano Chora at 1,000 metres, with fir forest and views. Elatou and Platanos, stone villages with flagstone lanes. Trikorfo and the monastery of Ampelakiotissa. In the Evinos valley, stone bridges and rafting in spring. And of course the harbour of Nafpaktos, one of the most photogenic in the country.
Autumn for the colours, winter for snow and fireplaces, spring for the rivers. In August combine it with swimming in the Gulf of Corinth.
Rooster with hilopites pasta, tsigarides, local tsipouro and spoon sweets. In Nafpaktos, fish beside the harbour.
In winter ask about road conditions before driving up; chains are needed in snowfall. Petrol stations in the mountains are few — fill up in Nafpaktos.
Three days allow for two or three villages, a bridge and Nafpaktos. The price covers accommodation with breakfast — you arrive in your own car.
