The Epirus coast of the Ionian Sea has everything within a short distance: an amphitheatre-like town beneath a Venetian castle, beaches with water reminiscent of the Caribbean, and a river the ancients considered a gateway to Hades. By car, you can link it all together in three or four days.
The Ionia Odos brings you to Igoumenitsa or Preveza. Parga is in between, Syvota half an hour further north, and the Acheron (Glyki) about 40 minutes east of Parga. The roads are good; the descent to Syvota and the beaches of Bella Vraka and Mega Ammos has some bends. Car ferries leave from Igoumenitsa for Corfu, if you’d like to extend your trip.
Parga was a Venetian possession for centuries and its castle still stands above the town; in 1819 it was sold to Ali Pasha and the residents emigrated to Corfu, taking the bones of their ancestors with them. In antiquity, the Acheron was considered the river of the Underworld; at Ephyra stood the Necromanteion, where the faithful sought to communicate with the dead.

Epirus and island cuisine combined: fresh fish and seafood on the coast, pies and goat in the mountains. Shrimp and mussels from the Amvrakikos Gulf are a local speciality, as is the cured roe (avgotaracho) of Preveza. Wines from Zitsa and tsipouro accompany the meal.
Parga has a lively seafront with bars, restaurants and crowds well into the night all summer — mostly a family and international crowd. Syvota is more relaxed and cosmopolitan, with boats in the harbour. In Glyki and the mountain villages the evening is quiet, by the river.
