Drama is the greenest city in Macedonia, built around springs that rise in its very centre. Above it stands Falakro, a 2,232-metre mountain with one of the country’s best ski centres, and beside it one of the most striking caves in Greece.
From Thessaloniki 160 kilometres, two hours. From Kavala 35 minutes. From Athens about 640. The ski centre is 45 kilometres from the city; chains are needed in winter.
The Agia Varvara park in central Drama, with springs, pools and plane trees — at Christmas it becomes “Oneiroupoli”, the largest Christmas festival in the country. The Angitis cave (Maara), unique in Greece because an underground river runs through it for more than 500 visitable metres. The Falakro ski centre with runs up to 2,232 metres and views as far as Bulgaria.
December for Oneiroupoli and skiing. Spring and autumn for walking on Falakro and visiting the cave, which keeps a steady temperature all year.
Drama wines — the area has some of the finest wineries in Greece, open by appointment. Local cheeses, bougatsa and smoked meats.
The cave is cold — bring a jacket even in August. During Oneiroupoli the city fills up; book accommodation from October.
