Naoussa is the capital of Xinomavro, the most demanding Greek red variety, and at the same time the base for Kaimaktsalan — the Voras ski centre, the highest in Greece with its peak at 2,480 metres. An hour’s drive takes you from vineyards to snow.
From Thessaloniki it is 90 kilometres, a little over an hour. From Athens about 480, five hours. The climb to the ski centre is 40 kilometres from Naoussa; in winter snow chains are needed and often compulsory.
Naoussa carries a heavy history: in 1822 it was destroyed entirely in the uprising against the Ottomans. The “Holocaust of Naoussa” and the legend of the women of Arapitsa are still alive in the town’s memory. On the summit of Kaimaktsalan stands the chapel of Prophet Elias, built on a First World War battle site.
The park of Agios Nikolaos, with plane trees and the running water of the Arapitsa, is the town’s signature. The area’s wineries welcome visitors for tours and tastings. Half an hour away, the Edessa waterfalls and Nymfaio with its mansions and the Arcturos bear sanctuary.
December to March for skiing. September and October for the harvest, when the vines turn red. In summer the area is cool and ideal for walking on Voras.
Xinomavro wine, Imathia peaches, local charcuterie and tsipouro bars on the square. Naoussa has restaurants that work seriously with local produce.
Book winery visits in advance — most receive guests by appointment. The ski centre publishes daily road conditions.
