Trichonida is the largest natural lake in Greece, 20 kilometres long, and one of the least known. Olive groves, villages under plane trees and mountains reflected in the water surround it. There is no tourist development — there is quiet, birds, and a road that circles the whole lake.
From Athens about 250 kilometres via the Rio-Antirrio bridge, three and a half hours. From Patras an hour. From Ioannina two. The lakeside loop is among the finest drives in western Greece — allow two hours with stops.
At the north-eastern end lies ancient Thermo, the religious and political centre of the Aetolian League. Here stands the temple of Apollo Thermios, one of the earliest examples of monumental architecture in Greece, with traces reaching back to the 10th century BC.
The archaeological site and Museum of Thermo. Myrtia Monastery with views over the whole lake. The village of Panaitolio and its olive groves. And the small lakeside beaches where people swim in summer.
The lake is a Natura site with rare fish species and rich birdlife — Dalmatian pelicans, herons, coots. Spring and autumn are ideal for birdwatching and cycling.
Lake fish, Aetolia-Acarnania olive oil, local cheeses and wine. The lakeside villages have tavernas overlooking the water.
The lakeside road is good but unlit — avoid it at night. The best seasons are April-June and September-October.
