Spetses is a cosmopolitan island of the Saronic Gulf, with mansions, pine-fringed shores and a strong maritime tradition. In the centre cars are banned and people get around by horse-drawn carriage, scooter and boat. Its short distance from Athens and its aristocratic atmosphere make it a favourite destination.
Spetses played a heroic role in the Greek War of Independence, with Laskarina Bouboulina, the first female admiral, leading the fleet. The maritime and commercial prosperity of the 18th–19th centuries shaped the mansions and character of the island. The annual re-enactment of the naval battle, “Armata”, honours this history.
The Dapia, the central harbour with its cannons and mansions, is the heart of island life. The Bouboulina mansion-museum, the Old Harbour with its shipyards and the historic Anargyros and Korgialenios School stand out. The pine-fringed beaches of Agia Paraskevi, Agia Marina and Zogeria offer clear waters.
Spetses cuisine is symbolised by “fish a la Spetsiota”, fresh fish baked with tomato and parsley. Try seafood, local meze and the almond sweet in tavernas around the harbour. The gastronomy combines tradition with elegant options.
Nightlife is elegant and cosmopolitan, with bars and clubs around the Dapia and the Old Harbour. The island attracts a young but also high-class crowd, especially Athenians. Evenings pass with a drink by the sea and carriage rides.
