Rethymno has one of the best-preserved old towns in Greece, a living monument of the Venetian and Ottoman eras. Between Chania and Heraklion, it combines Renaissance charm, long sandy beaches and a vibrant cultural life. It is ideal for those who love history and authenticity.
Rethymno flourished during Venetian rule as a centre of arts and letters, which is why it is also called the “city of letters”. The Venetians built the Fortezza, one of the largest castles of the era, while the Ottomans added minarets and fountains. The town keeps its intellectual and artistic tradition alive.
The Fortezza, the imposing Venetian fortress above the sea, dominates the town. The old town with its Venetian mansions, the Rimondi Fountain, the Great Minaret and the narrow alleys is unique. The town’s endless sandy beach, the Mill Gorge and the Arkadi Monastery complete the picture.
Rethymno’s cuisine honours the Cretan tradition with dakos, snails (hochlioi), antikristo meat and local cheeses. Try kalitsounia and the local xerotigano sweet with honey, accompanied by tsikoudia. In the old town’s tavernas the flavours are authentic and generous.
The nightlife of Rethymno is lively, with bars and raki venues in the alleys of the old town and around the Venetian harbour. The student presence gives it a youthful tone, while in summer the Renaissance Festival is held. The atmosphere combines romance and fun.

For your trip within Greece, a valid national ID card or passport is enough. If you travel by air, you need an official photo ID for the airport check. For minors travelling, please check any required documents in advance.
The local currency is Euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.
