Heraklion, the capital of Crete, is a lively city that combines Minoan civilisation with modern energy. Nearby lies legendary Knossos, the most important Minoan palace. A gateway to the whole island, it offers history, gastronomy and access to wonderful beaches.
Heraklion is inseparably linked to the Minoan civilisation, the oldest in Europe, centred on the Knossos of the mythical king Minos. In Venetian times, as Candia, it became a powerful fortress, while the Ottoman siege lasted 21 years. The city was the birthplace of Nikos Kazantzakis and Domenikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco).
The Palace of Knossos, with its frescoes and the legend of the Minotaur, is the top sight. The Archaeological Museum houses the Minoan treasures, while the Venetian Koules fortress guards the harbour. The Loggia, the Morosini Fountain and the tomb of Kazantzakis with its view complete the picture.
The Cretan cuisine of Heraklion is based on olive oil, pulses, wild greens and meat. Try dakos, gamopilafo, ofto meat and local cheeses, accompanied by tsikoudia. In the market and the city’s tavernas you will find authentic flavours that honour the Cretan diet.
The nightlife of Heraklion is lively, with plenty of bars and raki venues around Kornarou and Eleftherias squares. Students give it a youthful pulse, while there are also elegant cocktail bars. In summer the fun extends to the seaside areas.

Payment is due in full at the time of booking. For certain hotels that have their own payment policy (for example a deposit or a specific payment deadline), we'll let you know clearly before you proceed, so you know exactly what applies.
Yes — once your booking is confirmed, the price is fixed and won't be affected by later changes in flight or hotel prices. Availability and price can only change before your booking is finalised.
Several trips offer the option to depart from a city other than Athens (for example Thessaloniki), usually with a small additional charge. If this applies to a specific trip, it will be noted on the page or mentioned when we send your quote.
For your trip within Greece, a valid national ID card or passport is enough. If you travel by air, you need an official photo ID for the airport check. For minors travelling, please check any required documents in advance.
The local currency is Euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
