Thessaloniki is the perfect weekend destination by car: you arrive in a few hours, you can walk the whole city, and with your own car you’re free to dash off to Chalkidiki or the Pozar hot springs if you have time to spare.
From Athens via the A1 motorway, around 5 hours with one stop. Within the city, a car is more of a hindrance than a help: the centre has controlled parking and narrow streets, so choose a hotel with parking and get around on foot — all the sights are within walking distance of the waterfront. The car earns its keep on day trips outside the city.
Founded in 315 BC by Cassander and named after his wife, sister of Alexander the Great. It was the second city of the Byzantine Empire, and its Palaeochristian and Byzantine monuments are a UNESCO site. For centuries it was home to one of Europe’s largest Sephardic Jewish communities.
The White Tower and the waterfront with its Umbrellas sculpture; the Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius; the churches of Agios Dimitrios and Hagia Sophia; the Upper Town with its walls and views over the Thermaic Gulf; the Modiano Market and Bezesteni; and the Museum of Byzantine Culture.
The country’s culinary capital: bougatsa for breakfast, Panorama’s triangle pastries, soutzoukakia, mussels saganaki, and the meze bars of Ladadika and Valaoritou. The Kapani and Modiano markets are worth visiting in their own right. Tsipouro with meze is a local institution.
One of the best nightlife scenes in Greece, with a strong student character: Valaoritou and Ladadika for bars, Kritis Street for something more alternative, and the waterfront for a drink with a view. The city is lively every day of the week, not just weekends.

As this is a trip in your own car, there is no departure surcharge — you start from wherever suits you.
For your trip within Greece, a valid ID card or passport is enough. If you're travelling by air, you'll need an official photo ID for airport checks. For minors travelling, please check what documentation may be required.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked on your behalf, so the cost depends on how close to departure we are and each fare's rules. Let us know as early as possible and we'll look for the least costly solution. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless explicitly stated in the page's inclusions. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the European Union, so that medical care, cancellation and luggage loss are covered. We can arrange it for you — just ask when booking.
