Parga, built amphitheatrically above a bay of the Ionian Sea, is one of the most romantic seaside destinations in mainland Greece. With its Venetian castle, colourful houses and lush green beaches, it feels like an island. It combines history, beauty and relaxation.
Parga, thanks to its strategic location, passed through Venetians, French, British and Ottomans. The dramatic sale of the town to Ali Pasha in 1819 led to the mass departure of its inhabitants to the Ionian Islands, a page that went down in history. The Venetian castle still dominates the town today.
The Venetian castle, with views over the Ionian, is the trademark of the town. The beaches of Kryoneri, Valtos and Lichnos with their blue-green waters are enchanting. Very close are the Acheron river (the mythical “gate of Hades”) and the Necromanteion of Ephyra.
Parga’s cuisine combines Epirot and Ionian flavours, with fresh fish, seafood and olive oil. Try local meze, bureki and sweets in tavernas along the seafront. The region’s gastronomy is rich and Mediterranean.
Nightlife is lively, with bars, cafes and clubs along the picturesque seafront promenade. In summer the town buzzes with life until late, with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Evenings pass with a drink and views of the illuminated castle.
