Oinousses is a cluster of nine islets east of Chios, only the largest of which is inhabited. It has fewer than 800 residents and an unusual distinction: some of the world’s largest shipowning families come from here. The island is well kept, quiet and entirely off the tourist routes.
On the local ferry from Chios, about an hour, with daily sailings. Chios is reached by air from Athens (45 minutes) or by ferry from Piraeus.
The island was settled in the 18th century by families from Chios. Shipping made it wealthy: the Lemos, Pateras, Lyras and other families built mansions here and funded the Maritime Academy, which still operates and trains merchant navy officers.
The Maritime Museum with ship models and seafaring relics. The Sailor’s Mother monument at the harbour entrance. The Monastery of the Annunciation, an imposing building with views. And a walk through the settlement, with its neoclassical houses and clean streets.

Fresh fish at the harbour, local cheese and mastiha from neighbouring Chios.
Beds are few — book early. The island is walkable; you do not need a vehicle.
