Lipsi is a small Dodecanese island of fewer than a thousand permanent residents, between Patmos and Leros. No airport, no large complexes. It has a harbour with a blue dome, thirteen beaches and thirty islets around it that you visit by caique.
By ferry from Piraeus (an overnight crossing) or, more comfortably, a flight to Leros or Kos and then a local boat. In summer there are daily connections with Patmos and Leros, around half an hour each.
The island is closely tied to neighbouring Patmos: for centuries it belonged to the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian. Tradition places Homer’s Ogygia here, the island of Calypso — one of several candidate locations, but one the islanders hold onto proudly.
The settlement around the harbour, with the chapel of Agios Ioannis and its distinctive blue dome. The small Ecclesiastical Museum. And above all the boat trips: Aspronisi, Makronisia and Arki are half an hour away and have water like a swimming pool.
Platys Gialos is shallow and sandy, ideal for families. Katsadia has tamarisk trees and a taverna on the sand. Lientou is beside the village, while Moschato and Chochlakoura need a short drive.
Fresh fish, possa cheese, and the local wine from the island’s vineyards — Lipsi has a winemaking tradition going back centuries.
The island is covered by scooter or the local bus. In August accommodation fills early. Out of season connections thin out considerably — May and September are the best moments.
