Zagorochoria is a cluster of forty-six stone villages in the mountains of Epirus, north of Ioannina. Flagstone lanes, arched bridges and mansions built of local stone form one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in Greece. It is the ideal destination for nature, hiking and quiet in every season.
From the fifteenth century Zagori enjoyed a special self-governing status known as the Community of Zagorisians, which secured privileges and relative freedom. Wealth from trade and emigration funded schools, churches and the famous stone bridges built by master craftsmen from Pyrsogianni and the Konitsa area. In 2023 the cultural landscape of Zagori was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The Vikos gorge, among the deepest in the world relative to its width, with its legendary viewpoint at Monodendri, is the leading attraction. Megalo and Mikro Papingo, the Dragon Lakes of Tymfi, the Kokkorou, Plakida and Kalogeriko bridges and the monastery of Agia Paraskevi all deserve a visit. Add the Kolymbithres rock pools at Papingo and the villages of Vitsa, Dilofo and Tsepelovo.
Epirus cuisine is famous for handmade pies with pastry rolled by hand, from meat pie and zymaropita to pumpkin pie. Goat slow-cooked in a clay pot, local cheeses and mushroom pie fill the tables of the guesthouses. Pair them with wine from Zitsa and finish with a spoon sweet and mountain tea.
Evenings in Zagorochoria are quiet and warm, around the guesthouse fireplace or in traditional cafes on the village squares. Monodendri and Papingo have small bars serving local spirits, sometimes with live music. For a livelier scene, Ioannina and its lakeside bars are less than an hour away.
