Gavdos is the southernmost point of Europe, 26 nautical miles below Crete. It has around 50 permanent residents in winter and a few thousand visitors in summer, many of whom camp under the junipers. It is a place for anyone who wants to disconnect, literally.
By ferry from Sfakia (Chora Sfakion) or Paleochora in Crete, 2 to 4 hours depending on the sailing. Crete is reached by air (Chania) or ferry. In winter there are 2-3 sailings a week, easily cancelled by wind.
Tradition identifies Gavdos with Ogygia, Calypso’s island where Odysseus stayed seven years. In modern times it too served as a place of exile. Today the island lives on summer tourism and a little herding.
Tripiti, the southernmost tip, with the large wooden chair on the rock — the island’s most photographed image. The lighthouse in the north. The village of Kastri with its small museum. And the paths linking the beaches through juniper woods.
Sarakiniko with junipers on the sand, Agios Ioannis (the most free-spirited beach), Lavrakas and Potamos. Sand, clear water, minimal facilities.
A few tavernas with home cooking, goat and fish. Supplies arrive by boat — prices are a little higher.
Bring cash, a torch and sunscreen. Power in places comes from a generator or solar panels. Allow a spare day on the return for weather.
Five days, because the journey is long and the weather unpredictable. The package includes tickets and accommodation with breakfast.
