Western Macedonia hides two places few visit: Siatista, with 18th-century mansions that suggest a small inland Venice, and Velvento, a green village on the shores of Lake Polyfytos.
From Thessaloniki 150 kilometres, two hours on the Egnatia. From Athens about 450, five hours. Siatista to Velvento is 60 kilometres, an hour through the Aliakmonas valley.
In the 18th century Siatista grew rich on trade with Venice and Hungary. The Nerantzopoulos, Manousis and Poulkos mansions have wall paintings, carved ceilings and stained glass — open with a guide. The town is also a centre of fur making with centuries of tradition, and produces Moschomavro wine from a native variety.
At the foot of the Pieria mountains, with peach and cherry orchards and running water. Routes lead to the Skepasmeno gorge and Lake Polyfytos, crossed by the striking Servia high bridge — 1,372 metres long.

The mansions open by appointment or at set hours — call ahead. June is cherry season in Velvento.
