Pieria is the strip between Mount Olympus and the Aegean. Within half an hour’s drive you have an archaeological site, a medieval castle, a 2,900-metre mountain and a sandy beach. Few parts of Greece offer that density.
From Thessaloniki 80 kilometres, an hour. From Athens about 420, four and a half hours. Base yourself in Litochoro for the mountain or Platamon for the sea. Distances between sights are 15 to 30 minutes.
Dion was the sacred city of the Macedonians. Philip II sacrificed here, and from here Alexander the Great set out for Asia. The site has theatres, sanctuaries, Roman baths and mosaics — many of them below the water table, as the area has a high groundwater level.
The archaeological site and the Museum of Dion. Platamon castle, Byzantine of the 10th century with its imposing tower, built above the sea — it also hosts concerts in summer. Litochoro as the starting point for the Olympus trails and the Enipeas gorge. And Palia Pouri, an abandoned village on the slope.
Platamon, Leptokarya, Skotina and Paralia Katerinis — organised, shallow, family-friendly.
Fish in the seaside tavernas, meat and pies in the mountain villages. Litochoro has good kitchens serving home cooking.
Wear comfortable shoes at Dion — the site is large and often wet. For Olympus, the road to Prionia is unsurfaced but passable in an ordinary car in summer.
Three days cover Dion, Platamon, Litochoro and a beach. The price covers accommodation with breakfast — you arrive in your own car.
