Nestorio is a mountain village in the Kastoria region, built on the banks of the Aliakmonas with Grammos rising above. Most people know it from the River Party festival held here every August. The rest of the year it is a place of forests, river and complete quiet.
From Thessaloniki 220 kilometres, two and a half hours on the Egnatia to Kastoria and then 30 kilometres of mountain road. From Athens about 520, five and a half hours. The Kastoria-Nestorio road is good but winding.
Grammos gave its name to the last and hardest battles of the Civil War, in the summer of 1949. Fortifications and monuments survive in the area. Nestorio itself has a long tradition in woodcarving and forestry.
The Aliakmonas, the longest river in Greece, with bridges and riverside paths. The forests of Grammos, among the wildest in the country, home to brown bear and wolf. The villages of Ptelea, Chionato and Kotyli. And an hour away, Kastoria with Lake Orestiada and its Byzantine chapels.
Autumn for forest colour, winter for snow, summer for coolness and the river. In August the village fills for the festival — book very early if you go then.
Pies, Prespa beans, local cheeses and tsipouro. Kastoria has good restaurants by the lake.
In winter the road to the mountain villages can snow over — ask before driving up. Accommodation in Nestorio is limited; Kastoria has more options.
