Tsakonia, on the eastern side of Mount Parnon, is among the most distinctive corners of the Peloponnese. The Tsakonian dialect is still spoken here, a direct descendant of Doric — the only living survival of ancient Doric in the world.
From Athens 200 kilometres via Astros, three hours of bends but with striking coastal views. From Kiato about 2.5 hours. The mountain road from Leonidio to Kosmas climbs to 1,150 metres in 30 kilometres — one of the finest in the Peloponnese.
Leonidio, built beneath an enormous red cliff, has become an international climbing destination with over 1,500 routes. Elona Monastery, clinging to the cliff at 650 metres, is one of the most striking sights in the country. Kosmas, at 1,150 metres, with its square and plane trees. And Kastanitsa, a stone village of tower houses in chestnut woods.
Plaka Leonidiou, Livadi, Poulithra and Sampatiki — pebbles, clear water and fish tavernas at the water’s edge.

The road to Kosmas and Kastanitsa is full of bends — allow double the map time. Climbing season is autumn and spring; summer is too hot on the rock.
