A few words

Vienna is the capital of Austria and one of the most elegant, safe and historic cities in the world, also known as the “City of Musical Baroque”. Built on the banks of the River Danube, Vienna exudes an unrivalled air of imperial grandeur, harmoniously combined with an outstanding quality of life and modern European culture. It is famous worldwide for its magnificent palaces, its close ties with classical music and the arts, and its celebrated traditional café culture. It is a destination that feels like a living fairy tale, promising to enchant every visitor, whether they are after historic walks and world-class museums or romantic and gastronomic experiences.

History

Vienna’s history begins in Roman times, when it was founded as a military outpost named Vindobona. The city enjoyed its greatest prosperity from the 13th century onwards, when it became the seat of the mighty Habsburg dynasty. As the capital of the Holy Roman Empire and later of Austria-Hungary, Vienna became Europe’s foremost cultural, political and musical centre, attracting leading composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss. Despite the trials of the two World Wars and the post-war division of the city, Vienna was fully reborn and today hosts numerous international organisations, remaining one of the most vibrant cradles of European culture.

Sights

Vienna is an open-air museum full of architectural masterpieces. The historic centre (Innere Stadt) is dominated by the imposing Gothic St Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) with its striking multicoloured roof. The city is famous for its three great palaces: Schönbrunn (Schloss Schönbrunn), the Habsburgs’ summer residence with its endless gardens and the world’s oldest zoo; the Hofburg, the winter palace that today houses the offices of the President and the Sisi Museum; and the Belvedere, a Baroque jewel that is home to Gustav Klimt’s famous painting “The Kiss”. Strolling along the great circular boulevard Ringstraße, you will admire the Vienna State Opera, the Parliament and the City Hall (Rathaus). Finally, for a more light-hearted experience, the historic Prater amusement park with its famous Giant Ferris Wheel (Riesenrad) offers a wonderful panoramic view of the city.

Food

Viennese cuisine is rich, classic and deeply influenced by the surrounding countries of Central Europe. The ultimate national dish is the Wiener Schnitzel (a thin, breaded and fried veal or pork cutlet), traditionally accompanied by potato salad. Also very popular are Tafelspitz (boiled beef with broth and vegetables) and Gulasch. The city’s street food includes the famous Vienna sausages, found at the traditional Würstelstand kiosks. Vienna, however, is a paradise for dessert lovers: you simply must try the authentic Sachertorte (a rich chocolate cake with a layer of apricot jam) at the historic Hotel Sacher, and the Apfelstrudel (apple strudel with crisp pastry). Accompany your desserts with a Melange (the Viennese cappuccino) in one of the legendary cafés, such as Cafe Central or Cafe Sperl.

Nightlife

Vienna’s nightlife combines classic elegance with modern, youthful trends. For a refined evening, attending an opera at the State Opera or a classical concert at the Musikverein is a unique experience. If you are after bars and pubs, the Bermuda Dreieck (Bermuda Triangle) area in the historic centre is full of life every night. The MuseumsQuartier (MQ) district is the ultimate artistic meeting point, perfect for a relaxed drink in the museums’ inner courtyards. For livelier fun and clubs with electronic music, the spaces beneath the bridges of the Danube Canal (Donaukanal) and the area around the Gürtel railway line offer some of the city’s most popular underground spots.

Useful information

The currency of Austria is the Euro (€), so no currency exchange is needed for travellers from eurozone countries, and cards are used everywhere. Vienna is one hour behind Greece, and the country’s international dialling code is 0043. The city is served by Vienna International Airport Schwechat (VIE), located around 18 kilometres south-east of the centre. The connection to the city centre (Wien Mitte station) is extremely quick and easy with the CAT (City Airport Train) express in just 16 minutes, or with the more economical S-Bahn (line S7) suburban railway.

Tour's Location

When is the best time to travel?

This is a made-to-order trip, so you choose the dates. We are happy to advise on the best season for this destination and on how the weather, prices and crowds change through the year — just tell us roughly when you are thinking of travelling.

What is included in the price?

The main inclusions are:

  • Flight tickets
  • 1 cabin bag up to 10 kg (and 1 personal item)
  • Airport taxes
  • Fuel surcharges

The full list of what is and is not included appears in the "Included / Excluded" section on this page.

Will the flight be direct?

It depends on the season and the destination. Many trips do have a direct flight, but depending on your dates the airlines may not have a direct connection available for that period, in which case the trip may involve one stopover. We will tell you the exact flight routing clearly in your quote, before you proceed with the booking.

Is the "From €X" price what I'll actually pay?

Not necessarily. The "From €X" price is the lowest price available today, based on current flight and hotel availability for that destination. Because availability changes daily, the final price for your specific dates may differ. We'll send you a firm, written quote before anything is charged, once you tell us the dates you have in mind.

Why does the price change depending on the date?

Flight and hotel prices change daily depending on season, demand, day of the week, and how far in advance you book. That's why the price shown is indicative — the earlier you tell us your dates, the easier it is for us to secure the best possible price.

How much does a single room cost?

The single-room supplement varies by hotel and destination, and is included in the quote you'll receive for your specific dates. If you're travelling alone, let us know from the start so the quote already reflects the correct single-room price.

When do I pay for my trip?

Payment is due in full at the time of booking. For certain hotels that have their own payment policy (for example a deposit or a specific payment deadline), we'll let you know clearly before you proceed, so you know exactly what applies.

If I book now, is the price locked in?

Yes — once your booking is confirmed, the price is fixed and won't be affected by later changes in flight or hotel prices. Availability and price can only change before your booking is finalised.

Is there a surcharge if I depart from a different city?

Several trips offer the option to depart from a city other than Athens (for example Thessaloniki), usually with a small additional charge. If this applies to a specific trip, it will be noted on the page or mentioned when we send your quote. This trip is also available departing from Larnaca (Cyprus) — the flight price difference is calculated in your personal quote.

What travel documents do I need?

For destinations inside the European Union and the Schengen area, Greek citizens travel with a new-type national ID card bearing Latin characters, or with a valid passport. We recommend carrying your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well. Minors must carry their own travel document, and a valid driving licence is required if you are hiring a car. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with us before you book.

Can I change the dates or cancel?

Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.

Is travel insurance included?

Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.

Can the trip be customised?

Yes — this is an individual trip, not a group departure. There is no fixed itinerary and no coach schedule: you travel on your own, at your own pace. We can change the number of nights, the class of hotel, add or drop destinations and arrange transfers, car hire or private guides.

How do I book?

Send us a request through the form on this page, call us, or drop by the office. We will come back with availability and a written quotation before anything is charged. The trip as shown runs for 4 days.
