A few words

Budapest is the capital of Hungary and one of the most atmospheric and charming cities in Europe, also known as the “Diamond of the Danube”. The city is essentially divided in two by the majestic River Danube: the picturesque, historic Buda with its hills, and the cosmopolitan, lively Pest with its grand boulevards. Budapest is famed for its impressive architecture, its world-renowned thermal baths, and a unique energy that combines the imperial glamour of the past with a modern, youthful pulse. It is a destination that can satisfy every taste, offering everything from relaxing wellness experiences to intense nightlife, making every trip there an unforgettable experience.

History

The history of Budapest is rich and turbulent. The area was originally inhabited by the Celts and later by the Romans, while the Magyars (Hungarians) arrived at the end of the 9th century. For centuries, Buda and Pest developed as separate towns on either side of the river. The city’s golden age began in 1867 with the creation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and in 1873 Buda, Pest and Óbuda were officially unified into a single capital. Despite the enormous destruction it suffered during World War II and the difficult years of the communist regime that followed, Budapest managed to be reborn. Today, it is one of the most important cultural, tourist and economic centres of Central Europe.

Sights

Budapest is full of breathtaking monuments that lend themselves to countless photographs. The city’s absolute landmark is the imposing Hungarian Parliament, a neo-Gothic architectural masterpiece that dominates the banks of the Danube and, lit up at night, is simply magical. Crossing the historic Chain Bridge, you reach the Buda side, where a picturesque funicular takes you up Castle Hill. There you will find the majestic Buda Palace, the fairy-tale Matthias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion, which offers the most famous panoramic view over the entire city. On the Pest side, it is worth walking along Andrássy Avenue to the impressive Heroes’ Square, as well as visiting St Stephen’s Basilica. Finally, no visit to Budapest is complete without a relaxing experience at the city’s famous thermal baths, such as the beautiful Széchenyi Baths or the Art Nouveau Gellért Baths.

Food

Hungarian cuisine is rich and flavoursome, with intense aromas and a love of spices — above all, of course, paprika. The national dish you absolutely must try is Goulash (a traditional soup or stew with beef, potatoes and vegetables). For an authentic culinary experience and to buy local products, a stroll through the Central Market Hall is a must. There you will also find the popular street food Langos (fried dough usually served with garlic, sour cream and cheese). For those with a sweet tooth, Kürtőskalács (the famous chimney cake baked on a spit and dusted with cinnamon or sugar) is the perfect snack on the go. Do not miss a visit to one of the city’s historic cafés either, such as the world-famous New York Cafe, to enjoy a coffee accompanied by a traditional Dobos torte.

Nightlife

Budapest’s nightlife is unique in the world, mainly thanks to its famous Ruin Bars. These are abandoned buildings and inner courtyards of the old Jewish quarter (the seventh district) that have been transformed into bars with eccentric, retro and underground décor. The best known and most iconic of these is Szimpla Kert. This area is the heart of the city’s nightlife, packed with alternative bars, pubs, cocktail lounges and restaurants for every taste. For those looking for something livelier, the city has large clubs with electronic music, and during the summer months even “Sparty” events (parties in thermal pools) are held at the Széchenyi Baths. If you prefer something more laid-back, a night cruise on the Danube with a glass of wine offers a uniquely romantic experience.

Useful information

The official currency of Hungary is the Forint (HUF), so you will need to exchange currency or use a card (cards are accepted almost everywhere). Budapest is one hour behind Greece, and the country’s international dialling code is 0036. The city is served by Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), located around 16 kilometres south-east of the centre. Getting from the airport to the city centre is extremely simple, cheap and fast with the 100E express bus, which drops you off right at the central Deák Ferenc tér square.

Tour's Location

When is the best time to travel?

This is a made-to-order trip, so you choose the dates. We are happy to advise on the best season for this destination and on how the weather, prices and crowds change through the year — just tell us roughly when you are thinking of travelling.

What is included in the price?

The main inclusions are:

  • Flight tickets
  • 1 cabin bag up to 10 kg (and 1 personal item)
  • Airport taxes
  • Fuel surcharges

The full list of what is and is not included appears in the "Included / Excluded" section on this page.

Will the flight be direct?

It depends on the season and the destination. Many trips do have a direct flight, but depending on your dates the airlines may not have a direct connection available for that period, in which case the trip may involve one stopover. We will tell you the exact flight routing clearly in your quote, before you proceed with the booking.

Is the "From €X" price what I'll actually pay?

Not necessarily. The "From €X" price is the lowest price available today, based on current flight and hotel availability for that destination. Because availability changes daily, the final price for your specific dates may differ. We'll send you a firm, written quote before anything is charged, once you tell us the dates you have in mind.

Why does the price change depending on the date?

Flight and hotel prices change daily depending on season, demand, day of the week, and how far in advance you book. That's why the price shown is indicative — the earlier you tell us your dates, the easier it is for us to secure the best possible price.

How much does a single room cost?

The single-room supplement varies by hotel and destination, and is included in the quote you'll receive for your specific dates. If you're travelling alone, let us know from the start so the quote already reflects the correct single-room price.

When do I pay for my trip?

Payment is due in full at the time of booking. For certain hotels that have their own payment policy (for example a deposit or a specific payment deadline), we'll let you know clearly before you proceed, so you know exactly what applies.

If I book now, is the price locked in?

Yes — once your booking is confirmed, the price is fixed and won't be affected by later changes in flight or hotel prices. Availability and price can only change before your booking is finalised.

Is there a surcharge if I depart from a different city?

Several trips offer the option to depart from a city other than Athens (for example Thessaloniki), usually with a small additional charge. If this applies to a specific trip, it will be noted on the page or mentioned when we send your quote. This trip is also available departing from Larnaca (Cyprus) — the flight price difference is calculated in your personal quote.

What travel documents do I need?

For destinations inside the European Union and the Schengen area, Greek citizens travel with a new-type national ID card bearing Latin characters, or with a valid passport. We recommend carrying your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well. Minors must carry their own travel document, and a valid driving licence is required if you are hiring a car. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with us before you book.

Can I change the dates or cancel?

Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.

Is travel insurance included?

Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.

Can the trip be customised?

Yes — this is an individual trip, not a group departure. There is no fixed itinerary and no coach schedule: you travel on your own, at your own pace. We can change the number of nights, the class of hotel, add or drop destinations and arrange transfers, car hire or private guides.

How do I book?

Send us a request through the form on this page, call us, or drop by the office. We will come back with availability and a written quotation before anything is charged. The trip as shown runs for 4 days.
