Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, is a city of contrasts: an Ottoman old town with its stone bridge sits beside hundreds of neoclassical statues erected over the last decade. Built on the banks of the Vardar river, just a few hours from Greece.
A Roman city (Scupi), then Byzantine, Serbian and Ottoman for five centuries. The great 1963 earthquake destroyed most of the city, which was rebuilt with Soviet-style architecture. An independent state since the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991.
The Stone Bridge and the Old Bazaar (Čaršija) with its Ottoman inns and mosques. Kale Fortress, with panoramic views over the city. The main square with its giant Alexander the Great statue. And the Millennium Cross on Mount Vodno.
