Symi is one of the most photogenic islands in Greece, its harbour considered among the most beautiful in the Aegean. Pastel-coloured neoclassical mansions rise amphitheatrically up the slopes, creating a unique setting. Small and elegant, it offers authenticity and tranquillity.
Symi enjoyed great economic prosperity in the 19th century thanks to sponge diving and shipbuilding, which explains its rich neoclassical mansions. Its history is linked to the Knights and the Ottomans, while the monastery of Panormitis has always been an important spiritual centre. The decline of sponge diving led to emigration, but the island kept its beauty.
Gialos, the colourful harbour with its neoclassical buildings, is the trademark. Climbing the 500 steps of Kali Strata leads to Chorio (Ano Symi) with its castle and views. The monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis, an important place of pilgrimage, and the secluded coves of Agios Georgios Dysalonas and Marathounta stand out.
The gastronomy of Symi is symbolised by the “Symi shrimp”, a tiny crispy shrimp eaten whole. Try fresh seafood, local cheeses and meze in tavernas around the harbour. Authentic Dodecanesian cuisine is best paired with ouzo by the sea.
The nightlife of Symi is calm and elegant, with bars and restaurants around Gialos. Evenings pass in a relaxed way with views of the illuminated neoclassical houses, while cultural events are occasionally held. It is a destination for those seeking romance and quiet.

For your trip within Greece, a valid national ID card or passport is enough. If you travel by air, you need an official photo ID for the airport check. For minors travelling, please check any required documents in advance.
The local currency is Euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking.
