Patmos is the “holy island” of the Aegean, the place where John wrote the Book of Revelation. Beyond its deep spirituality, it is an elegant and discreet destination with an imposing Chora, picturesque harbours and beautiful beaches. It attracts pilgrims as well as a cosmopolitan crowd seeking serenity with style.
In 95 AD John the Theologian was exiled to Patmos, where, according to tradition, he received the vision of the Apocalypse. In the 11th century Saint Christodoulos founded the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, around which Chora developed. The Monastery and the historic centre are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The fortified Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, with its treasures and manuscripts, dominates the summit. The Cave of the Apocalypse, where the sacred text was written, is a place of deep devotion. The noble Chora with its captains’ houses and the beaches of Psili Ammos, Lampi with its colourful pebbles and Grikos complete the picture.
Patmian cuisine is based on fresh seafood, local cheeses and traditional sweets such as pougakia. Try fresh fish in the tavernas of Skala and Grikos. The gastronomy combines Aegean authenticity with elegant choices.
The nightlife of Patmos is discreet and elegant, in keeping with the island’s character. In Skala there are atmospheric cocktail bars and music venues, while Chora offers romantic evenings with a view. The crowd is cosmopolitan but low-key.

For your trip within Greece, a valid national ID card or passport is enough. If you travel by air, you need an official photo ID for the airport check. For minors travelling, please check any required documents in advance.
The local currency is Euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
