Mongolia has the lowest population density on earth: three million people across an area ten times the size of Greece. Travelling here means endless steppe, nights in traditional ger tents and a sky you have never seen before. The programme is built around you, with a private vehicle and driver.
In 1206 Temüjin united the nomadic tribes and was proclaimed Genghis Khan. The empire he created became the largest contiguous land empire in history, from Korea to Hungary. The capital Karakorum was founded in 1220. After centuries of Chinese and Soviet influence, the country became a democracy in 1990.
The Gobi desert with the red cliffs of Bayanzag, where the first fossilised dinosaur eggs were found, and the Khongor dunes that ‘sing’ in the wind. Erdene Zuu monastery, built with stones from Karakorum. The Orkhon valley, a UNESCO site. And the Genghis Khan statue, forty metres of stainless steel in the middle of the steppe.
Mongolian cooking is built on meat and dairy. Buuz, steamed lamb dumplings, are served in every home. Khorkhog is cooked with hot stones inside a metal container. And everywhere you are offered suutei tsai, salted milk tea.
June to September. Naadam, the national festival of wrestling, archery and horse racing, takes place in July.
