Lemnos is a large, gentle and authentic island in the northeastern Aegean, with endless sandy beaches, golden plains and rare sand dunes. It is ideal for those seeking a restful holiday away from the crowds, with outstanding local gastronomy.
The island has been inhabited since Neolithic times and is home to Poliochni, considered the oldest town in Europe. In mythology Lemnos is linked to Hephaestus, who fell here from Mount Olympus. It passed through Pelasgians, Athenians, Venetians and Ottomans and became part of Greece in 1912, while Moudros Bay played a pivotal role in the First World War.
The Venetian castle of Myrina dominates the town and on clear days offers views as far as Mount Athos. Also worth visiting are ancient Poliochni, Hephaestia, the Kabeirion sanctuary, the sand dunes of Gomati and the beaches of Thanos, Plati, Keros and Agios Ioannis with its famous rock above the tavern.
Lemnos is famous for flomari, the island’s handmade pasta, for wine from the Muscat of Alexandria grape and for its kalathaki and melichloro cheeses. Also try the local thyme honey, the fresh fish of Myrina and the traditional samsades pastry.
Myrina holds most of the island’s nightlife, with bars and ouzeri along Romeikos Gialos and the harbour. At Plati and Moudros you will find more relaxed beach bars, while the summer village festivals keep local tradition alive.

Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.
