Elafonisos is a small island off the southern coast of Laconia, famous for its crystal-clear waters and golden sandy beaches. The trip is made by road through the Peloponnese and completed with a short ferry crossing from Pounta. Four days give you enough time to truly relax and discover the island at your own pace.
In antiquity the area was joined to the Laconian mainland and Pausanias mentions it as Onugnathos. Opposite, in the shallow waters off Pounta, lies the submerged prehistoric settlement of Pavlopetri, one of the oldest known sunken town plans in the world. The Venetians called the island Cervi, and it became part of the Greek state in the middle of the 19th century.
The island’s signature is the double beach of Simos, with its dunes and juniper trees, along with Frangos and Lefki on the southern side. In the harbour the little chapel of Panagitsa stands on its own islet, linked by a small footbridge. A stop at Monemvasia and at the Pavlopetri site on the way is also well worth it.
The harbour tavernas serve very fresh fish, grilled octopus, anchovies and a wide range of seafood mezedes. Laconian cuisine adds syglino cured pork, lalangia fritters and outstanding olive oil. Pair them with local Laconian wines such as Monemvasia – Malvasia.
Elafonisos offers relaxed, family-friendly evenings rather than a party scene. After dark life gathers in the cafes and small bars around the harbour, while beach bars operate at Simos during the summer. For livelier nightlife, Neapoli and Monemvasia are close by.
The island is small and gets busy in high summer, so booking accommodation and a car space on the ferry well in advance is recommended. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with our office before you book.
The local currency is Euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.

Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.
