Between Kavala and Komotini lies a region most people drive past: the meandering Nestos gorge, its delta of lagoons, and ancient Maroneia, the wine city that intoxicated Polyphemus in the Odyssey.
From Thessaloniki 200 kilometres, two hours. From Kavala half an hour to the gorge. The old Xanthi-Stavroupoli road follows the river and is one of the finest drives in Thrace — skip the motorway if you have time.
The river forms striking meanders through riparian forest. A waymarked 7-kilometre path runs from Galani to Toxotes, with rafting and kayaking in spring. The delta at the mouth is a Ramsar wetland with flamingos and Dalmatian pelicans.
Ancient Maroneia has a theatre, walls and mosaics, looking out over the Thracian Sea. Beside it, the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus with stalactites. The modern village keeps its mansions and tavernas, and the area again produces wine from native varieties.
Fish from the lagoons, Keramoti mussels, local Maroneia wine and Thracian pies.
Allow 2-3 hours for the Nestos path and bring water. Rafting runs March to June, when the river is high. For birdwatching, winter and spring.
