Santorini is the most famous island of the Cyclades, built on the rim of a submerged volcanic caldera. Its whitewashed villages cling to the cliff edge overlooking the vast Aegean, while the sunsets of Oia are considered among the most beautiful in the world. It is the ultimate destination for couples, honeymoons and anyone seeking a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
The island’s history was shaped by the great volcanic eruption around 1600 BC, which destroyed the thriving Minoan settlement of Akrotiri and gave the island its present crescent shape. The prehistoric town, with its two-storey buildings and frescoes, reveals a highly advanced civilisation. The island later passed through Phoenicians, Dorians, Romans and Venetians, each leaving their mark.
The sunset at Oia, framed by Cycladic houses and blue domes, is the island’s iconic image. The archaeological site of Akrotiri, Ancient Thera on the rock of Mesa Vouno and the town of Fira with its museums are all worth visiting. The unique beaches of black and red volcanic pebbles —Red Beach, Kamari, Perissa— and a boat trip to the volcano and its hot springs complete the experience.
Santorini’s cuisine is built on the produce of its volcanic soil: the sweet Santorini cherry tomato, the famous fava, the white aubergine and chlorotyri cheese. Try tomato fritters, fresh seafood in the traditional tavernas and local dishes made with pure ingredients. The island is also renowned for its wine, led by the dry Assyrtiko and the sweet Vinsanto from the caldera vineyards.
Fira is the heart of the nightlife, with cocktail bars, clubs and venues overlooking the caldera. In Oia the mood is more romantic and relaxed, ideal for a drink after sunset. Kamari and Perissa offer beach bars and a more youthful vibe by the sea.

For your trip within Greece, a valid national ID card or passport is enough. If you travel by air, you need an official photo ID for the airport check. For minors travelling, please check any required documents in advance.
The local currency is Euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking.
