Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades and stands out for its authenticity, with mountain villages, fertile valleys and endless sandy beaches. It is one of the few Cycladic destinations that stays alive beyond tourism, thanks to a strong farming tradition. It suits couples and families looking to relax without excess.
The island is linked to the myth of Dionysus and Ariadne, whom Theseus abandoned on its shores. It was a major centre of Cycladic civilisation and an important producer of marble and emery. After the Fourth Crusade it became the seat of the Duchy of the Archipelago, leaving behind towers and the Venetian Castle in Chora.
The Portara, the monumental marble gateway of the temple of Apollo, dominates the harbour entrance and offers the finest sunset on the island. In Chora it is worth wandering the lanes of the Venetian Castle, while inland the highlights are mountainous Apiranthos with its marble-paved streets and Chalki with its old mansions. The Kouros statues at Flerio and Apollonas, along with the beaches of Plaka, Agia Anna and Agios Prokopios, complete the picture.
Naxos is famous for its dairy products, above all Naxos graviera cheese and xinomizithra. Try the local potatoes, Naxos beef and traditional rozeto, while the island gardens produce excellent vegetables. Kitron of Naxos, the aromatic liqueur made from citron leaves, is the island’s most distinctive product.
Chora has the liveliest scene, with bars along the waterfront and music venues in the back lanes. Agia Anna and Plaka have beach bars with a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful sunsets. In the mountain villages evenings are more traditional, often with live music at summer festivals.
